Tasting Notes
- Nose: The aroma opens with a fresh cinnamon roll, loaded with warm cinnamon alongside a slightly perfumey vanilla. Frey Ranch’s signature Honeycrisp apple note immediately announces itself before layers of nutmeg, cardamom, herbal rye spice, and deep maple syrup emerge as the whiskey continues to open in the glass.
- Palate: The first sip is a green apple Jolly Rancher explosion, backed by thick waves of candied sugar and rich caramel. The mouthfeel is wonderfully dense, with cinnamon spice slowly building underneath the sweet core without ever overpowering it.
- Finish: The finish begins with a satisfying burst of Red Hot cinnamon spice, though it fades more quickly than expected for nearly 130 proof. What’s left behind is a comforting combination of caramel, green apple candy, and dark rye bread that lingers pleasantly.

Craft rye has quietly become one of Frey Ranch’s greatest strengths, and this 7.5-year-old, 100% winter rye is an excellent example of why. Selected by the Degenerate Wolfpack (add participating groups here), this barrel proof single barrel clocks in at 128.08 proof and delivers the distillery’s signature balance of herbal rye spice and candied orchard fruit sweetness.
At $110 after tax, this isn’t an inexpensive bottle, but it aims squarely at enthusiasts looking for a bold, unapologetically flavorful barrel proof rye.

Presentation
Frey Ranch has long had one of my favorite bottle designs in the craft whiskey world.
The bottle itself is substantial, echoing the shape and heft of an actual barrel, while the heavy metal stopper emblazoned with the unmistakable FR logo immediately communicates quality.
The bright, straightforward label feels authentic, almost like something you’d find on a working farm rather than a luxury shelf, and together every design choice reinforces Frey Ranch’s farm-to-glass story instead of simply looking premium.

Distinctiveness
This is unmistakably Frey Ranch.
The familiar combination of green apple sweetness, herbal spice, and deep caramel immediately recalls the distillery’s signature character. Among modern rye whiskeys, especially within the craft space, it still manages to stand apart.
This isn’t your typical MGP rye, nor does it drink like a classic Kentucky rye.
Frey Ranch has carved out a profile all its own, creating a whiskey that feels less like another regional style and more like an entirely new breed of American rye.

“…an incredibly satisfying rye that doesn’t rely on overwhelming complexity or proof to earn its place on the shelf”
Transparency
As a true craft distillery, Frey Ranch leaves very little to the imagination.
The 7.5-year age statement, 100% winter rye mashbill, single barrel designation, barrel proof bottling, and the fact that every grain is estate grown, distilled, aged, and bottled on the ranch provide nearly everything an enthusiast could hope to know before purchasing.
It’s the kind of transparency more producers should strive for.

Value
At $110 after tax, this certainly isn’t an inexpensive rye, especially for a whiskey that’s just shy of eight years old. But this isn’t simply paying for age, it’s paying for an estate-grown, single barrel, farm-to-glass whiskey that can never be recreated once it’s gone.
Add in the fact that this has become one of my favorite releases of the year so far, and the price becomes much easier to justify for anyone looking to experience one of craft whiskey’s best expressions.

Buy if:
- You enjoy barrel proof craft rye with bold flavors.
- Candied fruit sweetness is one of your favorite rye profiles.
- You appreciate farm-to-glass transparency and estate-grown whiskey.
- You’re looking for a high-proof pour that remains surprisingly approachable.
Skip if:
- You prefer oak-forward, older-tasting ryes.
- You want maximum complexity in every sip.
- You expect a long, powerful finish from nearly 130 proof.
- You’re shopping within a sub-$75 budget.
Verdict
Frey Ranch has built a reputation for producing whiskey with a distinct identity, and this single barrel reinforces exactly why so many enthusiasts continue to seek out their releases. The nose is packed with warm baking spice and orchard fruit, while the palate absolutely steals the show with wave after wave of green apple candy, caramel, and dense sweetness. It’s a profile that’s immediately recognizable as Frey Ranch without ever becoming repetitive.
Where this barrel falls just short of greatness is the finish. Given the proof, I expected the spice and richness to linger considerably longer. Instead, it fades sooner than anticipated. Fortunately, what remains is enjoyable enough that it never feels like a disappointment, just a missed opportunity.
Ultimately, this is an incredibly satisfying rye that doesn’t rely on overwhelming complexity or proof to earn its place on the shelf. It knows exactly what it wants to be: a bold, sweet, spice-driven barrel proof craft rye, and it succeeds admirably.
Bourbon Bishop Bottom Line:
A quintessential barrel proof craft rye that delivers huge candied sweetness and herbal spice, proving that sometimes straightforward execution is every bit as satisfying as complexity.

About Frey Ranch
Unlike most American whiskey producers, Frey Ranch is a whiskey farm first and a distillery second. Located on a 1,500-acre ranch in Fallon, Nevada, the Frey family has been farming the same land for more than 165 years across five generations. In 2006, husband-and-wife team Ashley and Colby Frey founded the distillery to transform the premium grains they’d spent generations growing into a whiskey that truly reflected their land.
That vision became Frey Ranch’s “Ground to Glass®” philosophy. Every step of production, from growing the grain to malting, milling, mashing, distilling, aging, and bottling, takes place entirely on the ranch. This complete control over the process, led by Colby Frey and Master Distiller Russell Wedlake, allows the character of their estate-grown grains to define every bottle.
The motto engraved on every bottle, “Be good to the land and the land will be good to you,” perfectly captures the distillery’s approach. By combining generations of farming expertise with meticulous whiskey making, Frey Ranch has carved out one of the most distinctive identities in American craft whiskey, producing spirits that are unmistakably products of both their farm and their family.
