A new release from Green River Distilling Co. takes aim at one of whiskey’s most crowded flavored categories by stripping the concept back to something simpler: actual bourbon and actual honey.
OWENSBORO, Ky. (May 12, 2026) — Green River Distilling Co. has announced the launch of Green River Honey Finished Bourbon Whiskey, a new 92-proof expression made by finishing Kentucky Straight Bourbon with 100% real honey directly inside the barrel rather than relying on flavor additives or sweetener blends.
The release enters a category that has increasingly shifted toward lower-proof flavored whiskey products, many of which lean heavily on artificial flavoring and post-production blending. Green River’s approach is notably different in both process and positioning.
Rather than creating a whiskey liqueur, the brand starts with four-year-old Kentucky Straight Bourbon distilled and aged in Owensboro before introducing a proprietary blend of locally sourced honey directly into the barrel for secondary maturation.
The result, according to the company, is intended to preserve bourbon structure and proof while allowing the honey character to integrate naturally through barrel interaction over time.

This release matters less because honey whiskey is new and more because Green River is attempting to reposition what honey whiskey can be.
That’s a notable distinction.

According to Green River, the honey used is raw, pure, and unfiltered.
From a cocktail perspective, the higher proof may ultimately be one of the release’s more important features. Honey whiskey products often disappear when mixed, requiring bartenders to rebuild structure elsewhere. Green River is clearly positioning this as something that can carry cocktails on its own.
National Brand Ambassador Caryn Wells specifically pointed toward the Gold Rush as a natural fit, noting that the whiskey’s proof and built-in sweetness reduce the need for additional ingredients.

Green River Honey Finished Bourbon launches nationwide beginning May 15, 2026, with a suggested retail price of $24.99 for a 750mL bottle.
