The Pride of Owensboro

Founded by J.W. McCulloch in 1885, Green River Distilling Co. quickly became one of Kentucky’s most recognized whiskey producers. By the early 1900s, Green River had earned international awards, served as the official whiskey of the U.S. Marine Hospital, and became one of the most heavily advertised whiskey brands in the country.

The distillery’s reputation for quality helped inspire its legendary slogans, first as “The Whiskey Without A Headache” before evolving into the now-iconic “The Whiskey Without Regrets.” At one point, Green River whiskey became so valuable that barrels were famously traded for ownership interests in a Colorado gold mine.

A devastating fire in 1918 destroyed more than 40,000 barrels and much of the distillery itself, beginning decades of decline and ownership changes before the site eventually went dormant. Restoration efforts began in 2014, preserving much of the historic facility while bringing whiskey production back to Owensboro once again.

Today, Green River sources local grains while distilling, aging, and bottling onsite in western Kentucky. Under the Lofted Spirits umbrella, the revived distillery has quickly reemerged as one of the more respected names in approachable Kentucky bourbon.
