Distilleries Around Northern Virginia I’d Send a Friend To First

An event hall at the Reveries/Provenance estate which houses a multitude of old vintage cars

From whiskey clubs and barrel picks to historic producers and destination tasting rooms, these are the Virginia distilleries I’d recommend before any others.

People ask me all the time where they should start exploring Virginia whiskey. While there are dozens of distilleries throughout the Commonwealth worth visiting, a few consistently rise to the top when friends ask for recommendations.

This isn’t a ranking of the “best” distilleries. It’s a list of the places I’d send someone first. Some offer exceptional whiskey. Others offer memorable experiences. A few manage to do both.

Whether you’re new to Virginia spirits or looking for your next weekend adventure, these are the distilleries around Northern Virginia I’d recommend before any others.

Open Road Distilling Company

Why I’d Send Someone Here First: One step short of an adult playground.

If someone asked me for a single Virginia distillery that could satisfy almost any type of visitor, Open Road would be one of my first recommendations. It’s part distillery, part restaurant, part cocktail destination, and part speakeasy. More importantly, it executes each of those pieces well.

What separates Open Road from many craft distilleries is its ability to serve both enthusiasts and casual visitors. A whiskey nerd can enjoy a tasting flight while someone else in the group enjoys a cocktail and a great meal. Few places manage that balance.

What Makes It Special

  • Full-service restaurant
  • Hidden speakeasy experience
  • Strong cocktail program
  • Distillery tours and tastings
  • Great destination for groups
  • Easy recommendation for both whiskey fans and non-whiskey drinkers

Best For

  • First-time distillery visitors
  • Date nights
  • Group outings
  • Corporate events
  • Friends visiting from out of town

If You Go

Plan enough time to experience both the main restaurant and the speakeasy. Most people end up wishing they had stayed longer.

Lost Whiskey Club rickhouse whiskey barrels and antlers

Lost Whiskey Club

Why I’d Send Someone Here First: It feels impossible that this place exists in Fairfax County.

Lost Whiskey Club feels more like a private retreat than a modern tasting room. Tucked away from the usual Northern Virginia bustle, it has built one of the most community-focused whiskey experiences in the region.

While the whiskey itself is excellent, what keeps people coming back is the sense of belonging. Between single barrels, whiskey club events, (offsite) mountain gatherings, and home-made competition caliber barbecue, Lost has become a gathering place as much as a whiskey destination.

What Makes It Special

  • Single-barrel-only philosophy
  • Veteran-owned business
  • Strong whiskey club community
  • Mountain cabin aging project
  • Regular member events
  • Excellent barbecue

Best For

  • Whiskey enthusiasts
  • Single barrel hunters
  • Club and community seekers
  • Repeat visitors

If You Go

Check the event calendar before visiting. Some of Lost’s best experiences happen outside the tasting room.

KO Distilling

Why I’d Send Someone Here First: Some of Virginia’s best whiskey is being made right here in Northern Virginia.

When people talk about Virginia whiskey, names like Bowman and Catoctin often dominate the conversation. But if your focus is the liquid itself, KO Distilling deserves a place in that discussion.

Founded by military veterans and built from the ground up in Manassas, KO has quietly become one of the Commonwealth’s most accomplished whiskey producers. Their lineup spans bourbon, rye, and limited releases, but it’s their cask-strength offerings that have consistently impressed me.

The distillery’s recent success at the First Landing Cup only reinforces what many Virginia whiskey enthusiasts already know: KO isn’t just making good whiskey for Virginia. They’re making good whiskey, period.

What I appreciate most is that KO feels authentic. The team distills, ages, and bottles whiskey right here in Virginia while continuing to refine their craft with each release.

What Makes It Special

  • Veteran-owned and operated
  • Distilling their own whiskey in Virginia
  • Award-winning bourbon and rye
  • Excellent cask-strength releases
  • Strong commitment to local production
  • Convenient Northern Virginia location

Best For

  • Bourbon enthusiasts
  • Rye drinkers
  • Cask-strength fans
  • Visitors interested in Virginia-made whiskey
  • People wanting to see a working distillery

If You Go

Try whatever cask-strength whiskey is available during your visit. It’s often where KO shines brightest.

Catoctin Creek Bottle Your Own Station

Catoctin Creek Distilling Company

Why I’d Send Someone Here First: Nobody has done more to put Virginia craft whiskey on the map.

Catoctin Creek has become synonymous with Virginia rye whiskey, but visitors who stop there quickly discover a much broader story. From brandy and gin to experimental cask finishes, the distillery consistently demonstrates both creativity and craftsmanship.

Co-founder Becky Harris has also been one of the Commonwealth’s strongest advocates for craft distilling, helping elevate Virginia spirits nationally.

What Makes It Special

  • Virginia rye whiskey pioneer
  • Bottle-your-own experiences
  • Experimental whiskey finishes
  • Exceptional gin and brandy
  • Historic Purcellville location
  • Strong educational tours

Best For

  • First-time craft whiskey drinkers
  • Rye whiskey fans
  • Visitors interested in production
  • Virginia spirits enthusiasts

If You Go

Don’t leave without trying something besides the rye. The supporting cast deserves attention.

A spirits tasting flight at Mt. Defiance's old downtown Middleburg tasting room

Mt. Defiance Distillery

Why I’d Send Someone Here First: If they make it, it’s probably worth trying.

Few Virginia producers offer the breadth of spirits available at Mt. Defiance. Whiskey may draw many visitors in, but the gin, amaro, agave spirits, cider, and wine make this one of the easiest recommendations for mixed groups.

Located in picturesque Middleburg, the destination itself is part of the appeal.

What Makes It Special

  • Wide variety of spirits
  • Excellent tasting flights
  • Beautiful cigar barn
  • Middleburg location
  • Cider and wine options
  • Great destination atmosphere

Best For

  • Mixed groups
  • Cocktail lovers
  • Weekend day trips
  • Visitors exploring Middleburg

If You Go

Build in time to explore Middleburg before or after your visit.

A. Smith Bowman Cask Strength Batch 5 sitting on A. Smith Bowman Distillery entrance sign

A. Smith Bowman Distillery

Why I’d Send Someone Here First: Virginia’s most recognizable whiskey name.

Bowman occupies a unique place in Virginia whiskey. Collectors chase limited releases and cask-strength bottlings, while newcomers enjoy some of the state’s best introductory tours.

The combination of great whiskey, strong history, and easy accessibility makes it one of Virginia’s safest recommendations.

What Makes It Special

  • Historic Virginia whiskey legacy
  • Sought-after limited releases
  • Excellent tours
  • Strong visitor experience
  • Frequent events and tastings
  • Fredericksburg location

Best For

  • Bourbon collectors
  • First-time distillery visitors
  • History buffs
  • Weekend travelers

If You Go

Book a tour rather than simply stopping by the gift shop. Don’t expect limited releases (most are lottery and distillery-only pickup).

The Distilleries You Can’t Just Walk Into

Some of Virginia’s most memorable whiskey experiences happen behind doors that aren’t always open to the public.

Most distilleries on this list welcome walk-in visitors, scheduled tours, or public tastings.

The next two are different.

Dream Spirits and Middleburg Barrel Co. aren’t traditional tasting-room destinations. They’re built around private tastings, barrel picks, special events, and curated experiences. You generally won’t stumble across these on a Saturday afternoon.

If you ever get the opportunity to visit, take it.

Dream Spirits

Why I’d Send Someone Here First: Because you’ll never experience another whiskey destination quite like it.

Dream Spirits feels less like a distillery and more like a whiskey playground built around one question: “What would be fun?”

Massive barrel inventories, blending opportunities, private picks, and an entrepreneurial spirit define the experience.

What Makes It Special

  • Massive sourced barrel inventory
  • Private barrel picks
  • Custom blending opportunities
  • One-of-a-kind experiences
  • Deep whiskey knowledge
  • Constant innovation

Best For

  • Whiskey clubs
  • Barrel pick groups
  • Enthusiasts
  • Retailers

Middleburg Barrel Co. (Provenance Spirits, t8ke/Jay West’s The Reveries & Hunt Country)

Why I’d Send Someone Here First: One of Virginia’s most interesting emerging whiskey stories.

Built around Jay West’s barrel-curating reputation and other well-known names in the local whiskey space, Provenance offers a highly personalized experience where guests can taste, select, and bottle whiskey directly on-site.

What Makes It Special

  • Curated barrel selections
  • Bottle-your-own opportunities
  • Estate setting
  • Private tastings
  • Small-group focus
  • Access to exceptional barrels

Best For

  • Private events
  • Corporate groups
  • Special occasions
  • Enthusiasts looking for unique bottles

If You Go

Bring friends. This is a shared experience at its best.

Editor’s Note: I’ll be visiting Provenance later this summer and will update this article with a full behind-the-scenes look after my visit. Subscribe to never miss an update.
