Long before launching a whiskey brand, Shortbarrel’s founders built their reputation selecting private barrels throughout the Southeast. Between 2016 and 2020, the team participated in more than 350 barrel selections, developing a deep understanding of maturation, blending, and the subtle differences that separate a good whiskey from a memorable one.
What started as a passion project among friends eventually became a company of its own after a chance meeting in Louisville inspired them to take the leap from enthusiasts to producers. Rather than focus solely on sourcing or age statements, Shortbarrel embraced blending as a creative craft, using whiskey from multiple states and mash bills to create unique flavor experiences.
The company’s name comes from the rare “short barrel” phenomenon, where a barrel loses more than half its liquid to evaporation during aging. While devastating from a yield perspective, these barrels often produce intensely concentrated flavors. That pursuit of concentration, character, and memorable flavor continues to define the brand today.
In 2023, Shortbarrel expanded beyond blending and acquired Atlanta’s historic Old Fourth Distillery, helping preserve one of Georgia’s most important whiskey producers while investing in the future of Southern spirits. The move signaled that Shortbarrel was no longer simply an independent bottler—it had become a significant force in the broader American whiskey landscape.
