Virginia Distillery Company has built its identity around a simple but ambitious idea: take the traditions of single malt whisky and see what happens when they’re given a distinctly Virginia home.
From its 1920s Boby Mill and Scottish-inspired copper pot stills to more than 12,000 barrels aging in Virginia, VDC brings together traditional whisky-making and a willingness to experiment.
The result is American Single Malt with a personality of its own.
What Sets Virginia Distillery Company Apart
Old World Foundations
VDC’s process has deep roots in traditional single malt whisky production.
The distillery uses 100% malted barley, copper pot stills, and a historic 1920s Boby Mill; one of the more unusual pieces of equipment you’ll encounter at an American distillery.
But the whisky isn’t trying to be Scotch.
It’s Virginia.
The blend is the product, not simply the sum of its parts.
Virginia in the Barrel
More than 12,000 barrels were aging at VDC at the time of my visit, with the distillery’s rickhouses located a short distance from the main campus.
Virginia’s seasonal temperature swings create a very different maturation environment from traditional Scottish whisky country.
That climate becomes part of the recipe.
Cask Experimentation
Sherry, port, stout, STR, and other specialty casks give VDC a broad palette for developing its American Single Malt.
The results can move in dramatically different directions from brownie and cocoa to dark red fruit, almond, pineapple, and kiwi.
That’s where VDC gets particularly interesting.
The cask isn’t simply finishing the whisky. It’s helping shape what the whisky can become.
A Growing American Single Malt Program
VDC has built a substantial inventory of aging whisky while continuing to develop special releases through its Courage Club and other limited offerings.
That gives the distillery room to explore different ages, casks, proofs, and expressions as its whiskey matures.
And it gives drinkers something worth following.

Inside Virginia Distillery Company
My visit to VDC offered a look at the operation from grain to bottle, including the historic Boby Mill, fermentation and distillation, barrel aging, and a tasting through several of the distillery’s more interesting expressions.
What stood out most was the balance between tradition and experimentation.
VDC clearly respects where single malt whisky came from.
It also seems pretty interested in finding out where American single malt can go next.
