Mugen Spirit Introduces Oni, a Barrel Proof Small Batch Bourbon Inspired by Japanese Folklore

Mugen Spirits 3rd release in the Yokai series, Oni, a small batch barrel proof bourbon

A new release from Mugen Spirit is pushing deeper into the intersection of Kentucky bourbon and Japanese folklore — not through finishing techniques or production gimmicks, but through narrative worldbuilding tied directly to the whiskey itself.

LOUISVILLE, KY (June 2026) — Mugen Spirit has announced Oni (鬼), the third major release in its Yokai Series and the brand’s first small batch bourbon expression.

Arriving this June, Oni follows the previously released Tengu and Kuko expressions and introduces a new direction for the Louisville-based bourbon brand: barrel proof small-batch blending designed to embody one of the most feared supernatural figures in Japanese mythology.

Where many whiskey releases rely on technical innovation to differentiate themselves, Oni instead leans fully into atmosphere, symbolism, and identity.

And increasingly, that appears to be exactly what collectors are responding to.

Oni

According to Mugen Spirit, Oni was developed as the most primal release in the Yokai Series to date.

In Japanese folklore, Oni are towering supernatural beings associated with chaos, punishment, protection, and the untamed forces existing beyond human order. Often depicted as horned demons wielding iron weapons, Oni occupy an unusual place within Japanese mythology: feared, but not entirely evil.

Instead, they represent elemental power.

That mythology directly shaped the whiskey’s positioning.

Where Tengu centered around discipline and strength and Kuko explored transcendence, Oni is intended to represent something less restrained — a barrel proof bourbon built around intensity, force, and layered character.

The release also marks Mugen’s first move into small-batch blending rather than single-barrel-focused storytelling.

Selected by co-founder Kojin Tashiro, Oni combines multiple Kentucky bourbons into a unified barrel proof expression intended to reflect the “trinity of chaos” represented by the red, blue, and green Oni depicted throughout Japanese folklore.

“The Oni guard the gates between worlds,” said Tashiro. “This bourbon guards the line between extraordinary and impossible, and serves as the next penstroke in our love letter from Kentucky to Japan.”

That framing continues what has increasingly become Mugen Spirit’s defining philosophy:
using bourbon less as a standalone product and more as a cultural storytelling vessel.

The Art Continues to Be Central

Like previous releases in the Yokai Series, Oni features original artwork from acclaimed illustrator Yuko Shimizu, whose work blends traditional Japanese ukiyo-e aesthetics with modern composition and movement.

For Oni, Shimizu faced a different challenge than prior labels.

Rather than illustrating a single supernatural figure, the label required three separate Oni to coexist within one unified visual composition — mirroring the whiskey’s small-batch blending approach.

According to Shimizu, the final piece intentionally balances menace with humor, an emotional duality often present in traditional Yokai depictions.

The artwork portrays three Oni spiraling together mid-rampage:
a red Oni wielding an iron mallet, a blue Oni carrying a spiked kanabo club, and a green Oni gripping a ceremonial staff.

Visually, it continues what has become one of Mugen’s strongest differentiators within modern bourbon branding:
a cohesive artistic identity that feels curated rather than merely decorative.

At a time when many whiskey labels rely heavily on heritage aesthetics or minimalist luxury design, Mugen’s visual approach stands apart because it commits fully to narrative immersion.

Why Mugen Spirit Has Been Gaining Attention

Mugen occupies an unusual position within the bourbon space.

The brand isn’t attempting to imitate Japanese whisky.
Nor is it presenting Japanese culture as superficial aesthetic influence layered onto American whiskey.

Instead, the company positions itself as a bicultural project rooted equally in Kentucky bourbon and Japanese mythology.

Mugen Spirit was co-founded by Kojin Tashiro and Justin Delaney with the idea that the disciplines underlying both traditions share deeper similarities:
patience, craftsmanship, ritual, and transformation through time.

Tashiro’s own background informs much of that philosophy.

Born in Tokyo and raised in Kentucky bourbon country, he spent years navigating both cultures simultaneously through work in Louisville’s music, coffee, and creative communities before eventually building Mugen as a long-form expression of that dual identity.

“I wanted to create something where my Japanese heritage and my Kentucky home weren’t separate chapters, but the same story,” said Tashiro.

That broader narrative has helped Mugen build a following extending beyond traditional bourbon enthusiasts into design culture, art communities, and collectors drawn to storytelling-heavy releases.

The brand’s Lineage loyalty program further reinforces that structure through tiered membership concepts inspired by Zen philosophy and communal hospitality rather than traditional allocated bottle culture.

The Whiskey

  • Classification: Barrel Proof Small Batch Blended Kentucky Bourbon
  • Series: Yokai Series
  • Release: Third Major Expression
  • Creators: Kojin Tashiro and Justin Delaney
  • Label Artist: Yuko Shimizu
  • Availability: Limited release
  • Launch Timing: June 2026

According to Mugen Spirit, Oni was selected specifically to embody the uncompromising and chaotic energy associated with its folkloric inspiration while still maintaining the balance and structure expected from carefully assembled Kentucky bourbon.

As with prior releases, quantities are expected to be limited.

“Three Oni, three colors, three kinds of fury –
but they had to move as one. The composition
needed to feel like a storm with three eyes.”

Availability

Oni launches June 2026 through Mugen Spirit and select retail partners.

The company states that members of “The List” mailing community will receive first access ahead of wider availability.

Given the increasingly collectible nature of prior Yokai Series releases, availability will likely be constrained shortly after launch.

The Bigger Picture

The modern bourbon market has no shortage of limited releases.

What’s become increasingly rare is a brand building a genuinely cohesive identity around those releases rather than treating each bottle as an isolated marketing event.

That’s where Mugen feels different.

The whiskey itself matters, but the mythology, artwork, pacing, and continuity between releases appear equally important to the overall experience.

Oni continues that progression naturally.

Rather than chasing trends through finishing techniques or exaggerated scarcity tactics, Mugen is building something closer to serialized storytelling — where each release expands a broader world connecting Kentucky bourbon with Japanese folklore through both visual and sensory design.

Whether that ultimately becomes one of bourbon’s more enduring modern brands remains to be seen.

But with Oni, Mugen Spirit continues to establish a lane that very few whiskey companies are currently occupying.

About Mugen Spirit

Mugen Spirit is a Louisville, Kentucky-based bourbon brand co-founded by Kojin Tashiro and Justin Delaney. Built at the intersection of Kentucky craft distilling and Japanese mythology, the company’s Yokai Series pairs carefully selected Kentucky bourbons with original artwork by Yuko Shimizu and stories rooted in Japanese folklore.

The name “Mugen” (無限) translates loosely to “a dream is but a mirage,” reflecting the brand’s broader philosophy surrounding storytelling, artistry, and cultural duality.

In addition to the Yokai Series, Mugen Spirit’s broader portfolio includes the Shogun Series, which explores collaborations involving Japanese whisky cask influence and cross-cultural maturation concepts between Kentucky and Japan.
