CRESTWOOD, KY (April 7, 2026) — Kentucky Artisan Distillery is introducing a new approach to one of bourbon’s most coveted experiences: the single barrel selection.
The distillery’s new program offers 15- and 25-gallon barrels alongside the traditional 53-gallon option, dramatically lowering the barrier to entry for consumers, groups, and businesses looking to create a fully customized private barrel.
The experience builds on KAD’s existing Clubhouse Barrel Tasting Experience, but with an added layer of accessibility and speed. Guests can select, customize, and bottle their own single barrel—with personalized labels ready for pickup as soon as the next day.
A More Accessible Single Barrel Experience
Single barrel programs have long been a staple for retailers, bourbon groups, and deep-pocketed enthusiasts. But for most consumers, the cost and volume of a full 53-gallon barrel have made participation increasingly unrealistic.
KAD’s solution is simple: shrink the barrel, not the experience.
By offering 15- and 25-gallon barrels, both of which undergo secondary “double oak” maturation, the distillery opens the door to more personal use cases, from weddings and anniversaries to corporate gifting and first-time private picks.
As General Manager Mark Emberson put it, the goal is to make “bottling your dreams” more attainable — both financially and logistically.
The Customization Process
The program follows a structured, hands-on selection experience guided by KAD’s distilling team.
Guests begin by tasting through five mashbills:
- Wheated Bourbon (2 years) – 70% corn, 20% wheat, 10% malted barley
- Four Grain Bourbon (4 years) – 67% corn, 12.5% rye, 12.5% wheat, 8% malted barley
- High Rye Bourbon (4 years) – 60% corn, 36% rye, 4% malted barley
- Rye Whiskey (3 years) – 95% rye, 5% malted barley
- Distiller’s Choice – seasonal or custom blend
From there, participants move into barrel selection, choosing based on flavor profile and level of secondary oak influence. Final steps include proofing (80, 90, 100, or barrel strength) and label personalization.
The result: a fully bespoke single barrel, created in a single visit.

Pricing and Yield
The new, smaller formats significantly reduce total cost, though price per-bottle commitment slightly increases:
15-gallon barrels
- ~65–75 bottles
- $3,785–$5,678 total ($50–$75 per bottle)
25-gallon barrels
- ~115–125 bottles
- $5,299–$7,949 total ($42–$63 per bottle)
53-gallon barrels
- ~190–200 bottles
- $7,065–$10,598 total ($35–$52 per bottle)
Experiences begin April 8, with bookings available Wednesday through Sunday. Tickets are $50 per person and are applied toward the purchase of a barrel.
Why This Matters
This is a meaningful shift in how single barrel programs are positioned—and who they’re for.
For years, private barrels have sat at the intersection of exclusivity and scale. You needed the group, the budget, and the distribution plan to make it work. What KAD is doing here is breaking that model down into something far more flexible.
Smaller barrels don’t just lower cost. They change intent.
This opens the door for:
- Smaller bourbon groups and communities
- First-time selectors who want hands-on experience
- Personal milestone bottles that don’t require selling off inventory
- Bars and restaurants testing single barrel programs without heavy upfront risk
There’s also a subtle but important experiential shift. With next-day pickup and on-site customization, this leans closer to a “distillery keepsake” model. Something that fits naturally into a broader Kentucky Bourbon Trail visit rather than a long-term logistics project.
In short, it turns single barrels from a commitment into an experience.
Personal Note
I haven’t had the chance to go through this program yet, but this is one I’m genuinely curious to see in person. The smaller format, especially paired with double oak finishing, could lead to some interesting flavor outcomes that differ from traditional picks.
More to come if I get the opportunity to visit and run through the full experience
