About Backbone Bourbon Company

Founded in 2014 by Bill Kennedy and Nolan Smith, Backbone Bourbon Company focuses on sourcing high-quality barrels and elevating them through blending and finishing.

While the company formally launched in 2014, its roots trace back to 2011 when its earliest brands were sold exclusively in Indiana. The founders began investing in aged bourbon and rye barrels just as the modern American whiskey boom was beginning to accelerate.

Backbone’s identity was ultimately shaped by one early decision: don’t dilute character. When an early barrel sample arrived at nearly 115 proof, conventional wisdom suggested cutting it down. Instead, the founders embraced the intensity—and the flagship Backbone Uncut line was born.

Today, the company continues to focus on high-proof expressions with bold flavor, aiming to deliver distinctive whiskey that stands out while maintaining consistent quality and value.

Backbone Whiskey Reviews

Below are four Backbone expressions reviewed in full with detailed tasting notes and buying guidance.

Traditional and recognizable high-rye bourbon flavors. Enjoyable, though it drinks slightly hotter than the stated proof.

Pleasant but understated. The profile feels lighter than the proof suggests and never quite builds the intensity expected from an uncut bourbon.

A pleasant rye that leans delicate rather than bold. Promising structure but feels like it could benefit from additional age and depth.

A polished barrel-strength bourbon that balances sweetness and spice well, delivering the most complete experience of the lineup.
