Silverthorn Reserve
Precision Over Hype. Process Over Guesswork.
Baltimore, Maryland | Blended & Bottled
Silverthorn Reserve is a modern independent whiskey project built on experience, restraint, and control.
Founded by Drew Thorn, whose career spans over three decades in brewing and distilling, including key roles at Flying Dog Brewery and Sagamore Spirit. The brand focuses on intentional blending and transparent finishing rather than scale or speed.
This isn’t sourced whiskey dressed up with a story. It’s sourced whiskey refined with purpose.
What Makes Silverthorn Different
Most finishing relies on unknown barrels with unknown histories.
Silverthorn flips that model.
- Controlled finishing process using selected port wines
- CO₂ infusion to push finishing liquid into the barrel staves
- Elimination of “mystery cask” variables
- Blends returned to barrels to marry and further age
It’s less romantic. It’s more precise.
And it shows in the glass.
The Lineup

Port Finished Rye – Batch 1
Indiana rye. Maryland-aged. Precision-finished.
- Base: MGP rye (high + low rye mashbills)
- Additional aging: Maryland
- Finished using CO₂-assisted port infusion
- Profile: Candied cherry, rye spice, vanilla, crème brûlée

13-Year Single Barrel Bourbon (104 Proof)
Georgia distillate. Kentucky influence. Maryland restraint.
- Mashbill: 80% corn, 10% rye, 5% wheat, 5% malted barley
- Aging: ~13 years, including significant time in Kentucky
- Profile: Dark fruit, oak, tobacco, chocolate
Tasting Philosophy
Silverthorn doesn’t chase extremes.
You won’t find:
- Overproof heat for the sake of it
- Over-finished profiles masking the base whiskey
Instead, these are layered, evolving pours:
- Flavor builds through the mid-palate, not just upfront
- Finishes are long, controlled, and balanced
- Profiles reward time in the glass
This is whiskey designed to be spent with, not rushed through.

A Personal Note
I spent a few hours with Drew over lunch, just talking whiskey, backgrounds, and where the industry is heading.
What stood out wasn’t just the resume. It was the mindset.
There’s no urgency to overproduce. No need to force relevance. Just a clear focus on getting it right, building something sustainable, and staying connected to the people who actually drink the whiskey.
That perspective carries through every part of Silverthorn — from the process to the final pour.
Final Thoughts
Silverthorn Reserve isn’t trying to reinvent whiskey.
It’s trying to remove the guesswork.
And in doing so, it creates something increasingly rare—
a product where the process is as compelling as the result.
