Old Cypress

Louisiana identity meets well-aged MGP — distinctive, fruit-forward, and not without its tradeoffs

About Old Cypress

Old Cypress is a boutique whiskey brand rooted in Louisiana, built by founder Joey Faciane — a former chef turned barrel selector with a palate-first approach. Rather than coming up through distilling, his background in kitchens shaped how he evaluates whiskey: instinctively, flavor-first, and without leaning too heavily on specs alone.

While the whiskey itself is sourced (with “Indiana straight” clearly implying MGP), Old Cypress builds its identity through additional aging, finishing, and a defined house style. The goal isn’t to chase traditional profile. It’s to create something recognizable, often leaning into dark fruit, sweetness, and bold maturity.

The brand remains intentionally small and hands-on. Every release is limited, and every bottle reflects a process that prioritizes selection, patience, and control over scale. It’s a modern NDP model, but one that’s clearly personal.

The Reviews

Old Cypress Cherry Christmas (Photo Credit: Old Cypress)

Cherry Christmas

12 Yr 8 Mo Rye | 113.2 Proof
A fruit-forward rye built around cherry syrup, mulled spice, and an unexpected pop of strawberry sweetness. Unique and expressive, though slightly lacking the depth you’d hope for at this age.

Shoot Yer Rye Out

12 Yr 8 Mo Rye | 108.4 Proof
A more restrained and traditional profile, with caramel, cherry, and fig notes. Well-rounded and easy to drink, but leans a bit too safe to stand out.

Bayou Boogaloo

11 Yr 5 Mo Bourbon | 112.8 Proof
A tale of two halves — an uneven nose and palate give way to a standout, complex finish. Strong in moments, but struggles to justify its premium price.

Final Thoughts

This first wave of Old Cypress releases makes a clear statement: this isn’t standard MGP. The fruit-forward profiles and Louisiana influence create something distinct, even if the execution doesn’t always match the ambition.

Across the lineup, the ryes land closer to fair value, while the bourbon pushes beyond it. What ties them together is a willingness to prioritize flavor over formula and a house style that’s already recognizable this early in the brand’s life.
